Rationale
For my latest project I chose to recreate the matrix dojo scene on the top of the Burj al Arab helipad. I chose this because I would like to improve my animation skills as it is what I would like to go into when I leave Nottingham Trent. And the building is one that I have been impressed with ever since Federer and Agassi played tennis one it a few years ago.
The overall feel of my piece I think is quite good. I think it flows well and makes sense, I also think my characters work well, the materials were difficult to choose because I wanted to add fur but the time it would have taken to render meant it was out of the picture. I am also happy with the lip syncing, it took me a long time to work with the facial morphs that I had and get them to fit with the sound however I feel I did a good job, and whereas in some parts it doesn’t look totally natural in some parts It does.
I was very happy with my environment, I spent a lot of time making the building but didn’t want to spend too long showing it in the animation because it was not as important as the animation.
This is the first project I have included sound so I hadn’t had to work about my animations fitting with anything in previous projects, luckily the sound from the original dojo scene was not too difficult to edit as it’s mainly drums. But I changed all the punch noises around and again I think I did a good job.
I feel my rigging has improved hugely because of the project, because of mistakes I learnt to rig very quickly as I had to delete bones and start again when they weren’t working. I also eventually got the hang of working with envelopes, despite there being problems you can see in my final piece, these are because I didn’t set them up correctly in the first place and began animating. When I got to realising where the problems were it was too late for me to go back and I had to deal with what I had.
The main problem with my final piece is the length, it’s not long enough and I know that. My time management was poor and it’s something I kicked myself for afterwards, I spent a lot of time creating my scene, the Burj al Arab was much more difficult than I thought to model and to get it to a stage I was happy with took me a lot of time. This left me short for animating, and whereas I intended to animate the whole 4 minutes like in the film I had to cut a considerable amount of time out.
In conclusion I am fairly happy with my final piece, feedback I have received tell me it’s good and I feel I have come an awful long way since my last robot project. I have learnt a lot more about time management and 3ds max but know I have a long way to come before I can get paid and hired to do this sort of thing. Which is why I’m excited about learning more.
